《年長者肌肉流失》脾虛者營養攝取不足
老化的過程中生理狀況逐漸衰退，加上多重慢性疾病、身體功能缺損而導致不動，都會加速肌肉質量的減少。國家衛生研究院電子報第608期提到，「肌肉量」是影響老人死亡風險的重要關鍵之一，肌肉量較低的（最低的25%）老人其死亡風險會增加1倍。
亞東醫院傳統醫學科醫師林巧梅表示，中醫認為肌少症的病因病機多為脾虛，如脾胃氣虛、氣血兩虛、脾腎兩虛、陰虛火旺，通常患者體型較瘦；肥胖型的肌少症則是以痰濕阻滯居多。平時少動或退化性關節炎患者，通常也較容易得到肌少症。
據中醫理論而言，脾虛所造成的肌少症，原因是營養攝取不足。長者因隨年紀增長，會脾虛，導致消化不好、吃不下，水穀精微無法化生成為肌肉也就是容易營養不足，因此建議要攝取足夠的營養。至於肥胖型肌少症是由於，脂肪佔的比例大，導致肌肉比例會變少，建議飲食需適度、有節度。
林巧梅醫師認為，四神湯平和不刺激，有補脾胃效果也可去痰濕，對肌少症患者是很好的藥膳；陰虛火旺建議作息正常，別吃刺激性食；按摩足三里穴有助益。
建議長者能夠適度運動，例如散步、做些輕度的阻抗性運動如拿寶特瓶裝水雙手上舉、坐著雙腳輪流抬高等，都是對於減少肌少症很好的運動方式。
